Artist Statement
Artist statement is an initial approach to my creative work, by no means definitive regarding any of the expressive resources used in my creation.
Every work undergoes constant processes of enrichment, making it impossible to rely perpetually on the same technical and expressive resources. The passage of time and the numerous advancements across all areas of human knowledge prevent the creation of a work static in time.
My work focuses on expressing human nature, its relationship with the natural environment, and how both evolve through an inseparable process of action and reaction. This allows us to gauge the magnitude of human folly and our self-devaluation.
Closed Nature is an "infinite" series in which I employ the bull as the primary expressive element. It is the only animal for which humankind has built an entire stage designed to torture it alive until its ultimate sacrifice.
It is a spectacle in which both bull and bullfighter are utilized to satisfy and bring to light our darkest nature as human beings.
It matters little who is slain: the wagers have already fed the egos of many and drained the folly of others. In the sand lies the spattered humor of a thirsty crowd.
What would happen if we woke up and could no longer harvest the fruit of the trees? What would happen if nature decided to close itself off and ceased to offer us its fruits?
It would be a closed nature in response to human actions against the environment and the habitat that currently sustains us—a habitat that served as the seed to create and develop everything we possess today.
Paper as a physical medium takes on a leading role within the series, as it is responsible for providing one of the most vital colors in the work.
Peace is that blank paper we all hold in our hands, onto which, in many cases, we turn "crime into law," drowned in our arrogance and greed.
At the same time, it serves as a constant reminder of the importance of having a blank page to undo everything that alienates us as individuals and write what brings us closer as human beings.
These elements allow me to approach the landscape from another perspective, utilizing black and white and refusing to depict, within the fauna of my creation, any traits that recall human beings.
Black occupies all the areas guarded by angular forms that forbid the intrusion of the human hand.
It is like that "never again" uttered one day in the wake of the barbarism we are capable of provoking, yet which remains an unfinished task.
Black also recalls the black ink with which we write all our knowledge and chart the direction of our steps. Likewise, it alludes to Black people, who have been and continue to be victims of violence and prejudice to this day.
Closed Nature is a metaphor for the closed and impenetrable nature of the human being: the true predator.
Without question, minimalism, abstract surrealism, and figurative art are elements that inhabit my work and help me synthesize the concept, allowing me to forge a figurative universe of my own.
A natural universe: closed, yet alive.
Polymita Picta
Polymita Picta is my first collection of digital work. In its second volume, color allows me not to renounce it and to take as a departure point a tiny creature from nature—a victim of human vanity that endangers its existence as a species.
Its infinite spiral and color alert us, raising a question about the dangers of allowing ourselves to be seduced within a world where everything glitters and flashes in a thousand shades, spinning before our eyes much faster than our minds can comprehend.
The color of the Polymita Picta collection, much like that of other works, contrasts with the black and white of Closed Nature.
This contrast invites us to reflect on everything we ought not do against our own species, so that nature does not turn its back on us and we may continue to enjoy the gifts it offers.
It is a directly proportional play of action and reaction.
